Academic Enrichment and College Prep

The Nehemiah bus picks up participants from MacGregor, Poe, Lincoln, Lanier, and Lamar and transports them to this safe haven so that they may receive one-on-one tutoring, mentoring, a warm meal, and Christ's love. Students from the Center's prekindergarten program and Nehemiah Middle School also have the option of attending these after-school programs designed to level the academic playing field for underprivileged children.

Upon entering the after-school programs, each child is tested to establish his or her academic strengths and weaknesses. Those assessments, along with school progress reports and teacher feedback, allow the Center to put together personalized plans for individual growth and educational success. The goal is to insure that every student is performing on or above grade level and is promoted to the next grade level.

Volunteers for the Academic Enrichment and College Prep Programs are some of the best and the brightest that Houston has to offer including students from Rice University, Episcopal, Emory Weiner, Lamar, St. Agnes, as well as business professionals and loving individuals who just want to help.

Students enrolled in the Center's programs through high school will be eligible to apply for the Fred C. Alcorn Scholarship. This scholarship fund was established to provide financial aid to Nehemiah Center graduates so that they may attend college, trade school, or another form of higher learning.
