We transform lives through education and relationship.

Mission & History

Nehemiah Middle School (NMS) is a private, co-educational school that serves students in grades 6, 7, and 8. We are accredited by the Texas Alliance of Accredited Private Schools (TAAPS). The school opened its doors to students in August 2011 and graduated a third cohort of 8th grade students in May 2016. Nehemiah Middle School offers sanctuary from the stressors of poverty and fortifies youth for success in high school and beyond. United with families, in Christ-centered community, we transform lives through education and relationship.

Educational Philosophy

  • We celebrate the unique strengths of each person.
  • We address the academic, physical, artistic, social-emotional, moral, and spiritual lives of children.
  • We pay attention to the developmental needs of students.
  • We educate ourselves and Nehemiah families to better support students.
  • We learn from research and best practices to design curriculum and instruction.
  • We stay connected to graduates to advance their high school, college, and career aspirations.

Educational Practices

Student drop off time starts at 7:30 a.m.  The academic day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:40 p.m.  All students enrolled in NMS have the option of participating in the Nehemiah Center afterschool program until 6:00 p.m. with no charge beyond the monthly school tuition. With minor exceptions, the NMS school year coincides with the HISD calendar. Students follow a dress code of khaki bottoms, green or white polo shirt, and green school sweater.

The curriculum includes daily double periods of English and math; 6 weekly periods of social studies and science; 5 weekly periods of physical education; weekly periods for art, Bible, chapel, health/holistic living, journalism, keyboarding. Three periods of Extra Mile Time allow faculty to offer special topic classes such as Man-to-Man and stress management. Teachers and volunteer tutors provide extra challenge or support as needed.  Nehemiah Middle uses “Houston as a Classroom” and incorporates frequent learning experiences at museums, theaters, community service venues, churches, and outdoor spaces into its curriculum. NMS leverages its location in the resource-rich Museum District to provide unique opportunities for disadvantaged youth to enlarge their personal universe. Class size averages 12-14 students.  Monthly tuition is $90 (9 months of the year) and includes voluntary participation in the Nehemiah Center afterschool program until 6:00 p.m. Families also pay an annual enrollment fee and annual activity fee ($50 and $20).

Admission to NMS is a selective process involving student and parent interviews and student testing. Characteristics of the ideal NMS student include:

  • Qualifies for free or reduced lunch
  • Has excellent (E) or satisfactory (S) conduct grades
  • Presents report cards with average or better grades (no failing grades)
  • Performs at, above, or within one grade level on Iowa and Stanford tests
  • Does not receive special education or Section 504 services
  • Achieves admission screening results that suggest a strong probability for success at NMS
  • Has an excellent attendance and on-time arrival record
  • Has parents/guardians willing to fulfill the parent participation requirements of the Nehemiah Center/Nehemiah Middle School
