Nehemiah Middle School
Opening Fall 2011
After 14 years of successfully serving low-income, minority children and families in Houston, the Nehemiah Center Board of Trustees unanimously approved the founding of Nehemiah Middle School to address the academic, social, emotional, spiritual, and wellness needs of economically disadvantaged students in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th, starting with an entry class of sixth-graders in August 2011.
Extensive research and reflection have yielded an initial blueprint for Nehemiah Middle School as follows:
- The students of Nehemiah Middle will be taught healthy habits of nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle and will have the opportunity to experience the benefits of physical well-being so that healthy choice-making becomes an ingrained practice;
- Nehemiah Middle will focus on high academic expectations, small class size, increased time for learning, intensive focus on math and language;
- Nehemiah's young adolescents will be primed to benefit from other characteristics of an exemplary program with emphasis on collaborative skills, self-management, and career awareness;
- Nehemiah Middle School will Partner with parents and commit to assisting its graduates through their high school and post-secondary education.
